Karsten Bangshaab

Your company’s need for management depends on your warehouse type. We are used to working with all warehouse types, which can be categorized into the following groups:

  • Wholesale/distribution
  • Production
  • E-commerce
  • 3PL warehouse

Each warehouse type has its own characteristics and requirements in terms of management. Seen in isolation, the overall warehouse types can be characterized as follows:

Wholesale/distribution

Wholesale warehouses are characterized by a low profit margin, a need for low handling costs and maximum utilization of capacity, short time slots and high variation in turnover rate.

Production

Warehouses within the production category can be further categorized into:

  • Raw material
  • Semi-finished goods
  • Finished goods
  • Spare parts

Coordination between production and warehouse is vital to optimum flow and efficiency. Goods for production orders need to be accessible at the production cells just before production starts; preferably not too long before and certainly not later. Goods delivered before take up unnecessary space in the production area and can get in the way. Goods that are delivered too late result in poor capacity utilization. After the production process, the manufactured items (semi-finished/finished products) need to be moved on to the next process in line, moved to the warehouse or to be packed and shipped. They must not take up space in the production area.

E-commerce

E-commerce warehousing is characterized by ultra-short time slots and the handling of many small orders and returns.

3PL / Third-party logistics

In 3PL/Third-party logistics, flexibility is vital in order to handle reversible investments, settlements based on used storage capacity and number of dispatches and not least the various shifting needs of a potentially large group of different clients.

When it comes to warehouses, it is not “one size fits all”. Rather, the warehouse layout should reflect the company’s individual needs. Moreover, these needs are bound to change over time, which requires scalable and flexible solutions.

There are countless ways to adapt and streamline a manual warehouse. It often pays off to automate specific sections of the warehouse – e.g. by means of storage and retrieval system, conveyor systems, mini loads and vertical lifts. Even in smaller spaces, automated equipment can generate a high return of investment (ROI).

When installing automated equipment in an existing warehouse it is vital to ensure a good integration between the manual and the automated parts of the warehouse to ensure optimum flow.

In the other end of the scale is the fullyautomated warehouse, but even these typically include some manual elements, as there are almost always items that are not suited for automatic handling equipment. Regardless of the degree of automation, optimum integration and load balance between components is paramount.

At Logimatic we are committed to staying up to speed on industry dynamics, and we continue to develop our expertise through our close cooperation with Aalborg University and our business partners.
